Travelling waves in a straight square duct
Isothermal, incompressible flow in a straight duct with square cross-section is known to be linearly stable [1]. Direct numerical simulation, on the other hand, has revealed that turbulence in this geometry is self-sustained above a Reynolds number value of approximately 1100, based on the bulk velocity and the duct half-width [2]. Numerous non-linear equilibrium solutions have already been ide...
متن کاملCutoff frequencies of electromagnetic waves Propagating in a hexagonal waveguide
Abstract-In this work, cut-off frequencies of propagation of electromagnetic waves in a hexagonal waveguide are calculated using twodimensional (2-D) finite element method. The numerical approach is a standard one and involves six finite elements. A new type of hexagonal waveguide structure for the simple homogeneous dielectric case has been considered. The starting point is Maxwell’s equations...
متن کاملNew Regime of MHD Turbulence: Cascade Below Viscous Cutoff
In astrophysical situations, e.g. in the interstellar medium (ISM), neutrals can provide viscous damping on scales much larger than the magnetic diffusion scale. Through numerical simulations, we have found that the magnetic field can have a rich structure below the dissipation cutoff scale. This implies that magnetic fields in the ISM can have structures on scales much smaller than parsec scal...
متن کاملWaveguide arrays as plasmonic metamaterials: transmission below cutoff.
Since the work of Ebbesen et al. [Nature (London) 391, 667 (1998)], there has been immense interest in the optical properties of subwavelength holes in metal layers. While the enhanced transmission observed is generally associated with surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), theoretical predictions suggest a similar response with perfectly conducting materials. However, Pendry et al. [Science 305, 8...
متن کاملThree-dimensional traveling waves in a square duct.
A nonlinear streamwise traveling-wave solution is obtained by homotopy for square duct flow. For a particular symmetry of the perturbations, this wave comes into existence at about Re(b)=600 (based on half-duct width and bulk speed) for a streamwise wave number alpha=0.85 . The resulting four-vortex mean flow resembles the transitional flow structures observed in previous simulations.
